Journey 3

During ECI 508, I conducted research on motivating parents to become involved with their child's education.  Parent involvement is one of the pieces that helps a student's education become a postive expereince.  Going into this research I had a stereotype of my parents who live in a low socioeconomic status, that they do not care about their child's education, because of the challenge teachers have in contacting them and the lack of attendence during conferences.  At the end of my research,  it was evident that my stereotype was false.  80% of these parents care about their children's education, based on a statistic.  Many of these parents want their children to be successful in school because it will provide them the opprotunities of being more mobile and creating a hopeful future for them.  Therefore, it is important that teachers reach out to these parents.  A main factor that inhibits the academic growth for these children is the lack of support from home.  As teachers, we need to not only reach out to the children but also their parents by educating them on how to assist their children at home. For ECI 545, my partner and I created an action research based on the schema theory in building comprehension skills for students with disabilities.  Schema is another technique that helps assist a child when learning comprehension skills.  Teachers need to provide children with opprotunities to build their prior knowledge before reading a text.  Schema helps children to inference and make personnal connections to the text.
